Exponential backoff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
en.wikipedia.org on

Excerpt: In a variety of computer networks, binary exponential backoff or truncated binary exponential backoff refers to an algorithm used to space out repeated retransmissions of the same block of data, often as part of network congestion avoidance. Examples are the retransmission of frames in carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) and carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) networks, where this algorithm is part of the channel access method used to send data on these network. In Ethernet networks, the algorithm is commonly used to schedule retransmissions after collisions. The retransmission is delayed by an amount of time derived from the slot time and the number of attempts to retransmit.... read the full post.

Our Statement on Public Access to Federally-Supported Research Data
science.okfn.org on

Excerpt: Open Access to research publications often takes the limelight in national debates about access to research – but at the Open Knowledge Foundation we know there are also other pressing issues; like the need for Open Data. So we submitted a short written statement to the ongoing US Public Comment Meeting concerning Public Access to Federally Supported R&D Data. Our statement is below: Each year, the Federal Government spends over $100 billion on research. This investment, in part is used to gather new data. But all too often the new data gathered isn’t made publicly available and thus can’t generate maximum return on investment through later re-use by other researchers, policy-makers, clinicians and everyday taxpaying citizens.... read the full post.

Sandboxes Add Templates and New Look
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: The Summer ’13 release includes a couple major changes for sandbox users: templates and a new look that makes it even easier to create and manage your sandboxes. What are Sandbox templates? Sandboxes contain copies of your organization’s configuration and (optionally) data. Use sandboxes for training or to test, configure, and deploy changes to a production organization. Full sandboxes are particularly useful for development teams to coordinate testing and deployment to production organizations. Previously, when you created a Full sandbox, all of your organization’s data was copied to the sandbox.... read the full post.

Why Google thinks the GPU is the engine for the web of the future
gigaom.com on

Excerpt: Summary: To make sure the response time for their increasingly interactive sites stays low, Chrome developers might want to look at ways to make use of the graphic processors embedded in consumer devices. For years, the internet provided users with static clumps of information stored and refreshed in databases on the back end. But as interactive games, animations and fancy scrolling have become popular, graphics have become fancier and screens richer. Throughout this evolution, hardware components on users’ devices have gotten more capable, but now Google seems to think the GPU is the best tool for the internet of tomorrow.... read the full post.

StackMob Introduces Smarter Offline Sync
blog.stackmob.com on

Excerpt: The ability for apps to work offline is the most requested feature we see from developers. Queuing up requests made offline works in the beginning, but it doesn’t scale. You quickly find that two collaborators end up overwriting each others’ data, and data integrity is lost. We believe this doesn’t need to be a limitation which inhibits the success of your app, which is why we’ve built Offline Sync. StackMob’s Offline Sync represents a smarter class of client-server synchronization. Rather than simply queuing up save requests offline and overwriting data on the server when your app goes back online, the system is uniquely architected with merge policies for conflict-resolution.... read the full post.

Connecting Kindle Fire to Reality with App-Enabled Accessories - Amazon Mobile App Distribution Blog
developer.amazon.com on

Excerpt: Mobile devices create an amazing ecosystem for developers to express new ideas, create new business, and expand existing worlds. Services like GameCircle and In-App Purchasing make those experiences more sticky and re-playable, drawing users into the experience with more depth. Another category of ecosystem depth that we've been focusing on is app-enabled accessories. Kindle Fire (as well as other Android devices) can connect to and control an incredible range of new devices, and a couple weeks ago we launched a few of these devices on Amazon. com as official Kindle accessories, creating new ways and new opportunities for developers to connect with Amazon customers. From the self-stabilizing, Kindle-controllable AR.... read the full post.
