Meet BRCK, a piece of hardware that will bring you the Internet when all lights go out
thenextweb.com
on 05/06/2013
Excerpt: When the Internet goes down, so too does modern life. Like it or not, having a connection to the Internet means that you can be informed, available, and part of the global conversation. Offline, you are just sitting there. Alone. Kickstarter project BRCK wants to make sure that no matter where you are in the world, you can be online. It’s a neat idea, and one that I support. The company’s motto explains the soul of the project: “if it works in Africa, it will work anywhere. ” What it means by that is if the device brings Internet access to less developed part of the world, it will work in any other environment. The group is raising $125,000 to get the BRCK from prototype through the manufacturing process.... read the full post.

Stress Testing HTTP with Twisted Python and Treq
blog.mailgun.net
on 04/29/2013
Excerpt: Being in the API business has its challenges and maintaining the robustness of the system during peak hours is one of them. That’s why we do lots of stress testing here at Mailgun. We have tried many different approaches over time, from simple Apache bench to more complicated custom testing suites. But this post is about a “quick and dirty” yet very flexible stress testing using Python. When it comes to writing HTTP clients in Python we are fans of the Requests library. This is what we recommend to our API users. Requests is great, but it has one weakness: it’s a blocking one-call-per-thread affair: it’s hard or impossible to generate tens of thousands of requests quickly with it.... read the full post.

Who's a Nerdy Girl?
zanytomato.tumblr.com
on 03/10/2013
Excerpt: I’m a programmer. A software engineer by some standards. And I’ve been coding since I was a little girl—I first started poking at BASIC on my dad’s TI99/4A around age five. I note that neither of my parents are particularly tech-savvy, and I grew up in a household where there was no particular attention (that I can recall) given to the fact that as a young woman I could attain whatever career I wanted—it was just a given. My love of programming, though, was not always. What I loved so much as a child, I know now as a computer-science educator, was computer science itself. I loved the puzzles, the “what-ifs”, and the technology—deeply and viscerally. Programming was just a way to get to the good stuff.... read the full post.

Encouraging Girls to Learn Computer Coding
bits.blogs.nytimes.com
on 03/08/2013
Excerpt: LONDON — At 16, Isabelle Aleksander spends hours writing computer code and plans a career in engineering. Her latest passion is the Raspberry Pi, a low-cost, credit-card-size computer developed to help teach programming. News from the technology industry, including start-ups, the Internet, enterprise and gadgets. On Twitter: @nytimesbits. But when she told her best friend — “he’s male, also into programming” — his response was not what she had expected. “He was like, ‘Wait, how do you know about them? You’re a girl and you shouldn’t be doing that,”’ Ms. Aleksander said incredulously.... read the full post.

Excerpt: Women were some of the first programmers and continue to make a major impact on the programming world today. We think it’s important to highlight the great work women are doing in computer science, to help provide role models for young women thinking about careers in computing. Tomorrow is International Women’s Day, and as one of our contributions to the celebration, we’re proud to support Voices Global Conference, presented by Global Tech Women. As part of this 24-hour live streamed event, Google will provide more than a dozen hours of free talks featuring women working in computer science, beginning today.... read the full post.

Disruptions: 3-D Printing Is on the Fast Track
bits.blogs.nytimes.com
on 02/18/2013
Excerpt: At first glance, looking at past predictions about the future of technology, prognosticators got a whole lot wrong. The Web is a garbage dump of inaccurate guesses about the year 2000, 2010 and beyond. Flying cars, robotic maids and jet packs still are nowhere near a reality. Yet the prediction that 3-D printers will become a part of our daily lives is happening much sooner than anyone anticipated. These printers can produce objects, even rather intricate ones, by printing thin layer after layer of plastic, metal, ceramics or other materials. And the products they make can be highly customized. Jae C. Hong/Associated Press A 3-D printer on display at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.... read the full post.

Google+ Hangouts On Air and SMBs
www.cloudave.com
on 05/08/2012
Excerpt: Yesterday Google unwrapped the Google+ Hangouts on Air to general public with relatively little fanfare. This is part of Google’s social strategy but the product has the potential to disrupt many startups in the space, especially the ones targeting consumers and SMBs. Google could flex their Youtube muscle to literally shove them away. Google+ hangouts are available as a part of Google+ from the beginning. Google+ Hangouts on Air takes it much further even offering an option to live broadcast on Youtube. Though this is significant from the point of view of their Youtube business in the long run, I am going to see it from the other side and talk about how SMBs can take advantage of this nifty tool.... read the full post.
My Thoughts: Nice new features from Google+ regarding hang-outs. Krishnan has a great idea, to use for open office hours. Seems like a great use for API evangelists and advocates to use to support their API ecosystem.

Oracle gets a chance to rewrite software law

Every now and again, a court case comes along that stands to rewrite the legal rules of the computing industry -- and we might just be at such a juncture right now. Oracle's suit against Google over Java and Android could be one such case. It's putting to the test the notion that application programming interfaces -- APIs -- can be copyrighted. In a partial verdict today, a jury gave Oracle a hard-fought "yes" when U. S.... read the full post.
My Thoughts: This story has the best detail I've seen of any of the posts so far. This post has a wealth of links and raw data that I need to dive into. I'm setting aside for more research.
