How to Bring Transparency to Work
blog.yammer.com
on 05/09/2013
Excerpt: As one employee, part of a larger company, organization and team, we often get wrapped up in our daily jobs and forget to lift our head up and take a look around. We occasionally may lose sight of how our work impacts the company or how other employees could influence our work. Looking beyond your own work, and reaching out to others in your company is a vital part aligning yourself to your teammates and organization. How do we go about doing this? Being transparent about what you’re working on, asking for help, and sharing information is just the beginning. This may seem overwhelming, but the fact is, being transparent in your work is as easy as mentioning a colleague on Yammer.... read the full post.

Google transparency report 2013: find out what the world's governments want to know about you
www.guardian.co.uk
on 04/26/2013
Excerpt: More and more governments around the world are either asking Google to remove content - or tell them who its users are. Google's transparency report is the guide to how the governments of the world are interacting with the web giant in 2012. And it's an alarming picture. The report covers two types of requests:
• Government requests to remove content from Google
• Government requests from around the world to hand over user data
The is is how those numbers break down. The latest report, which covers up to the end of last year, shows that in 2012 there were 21,389 inquiries from governments around the world. Those requests were for information about 33,634 accounts - these are users' accounts.... read the full post.

The messy reality of open data and politics
www.guardian.co.uk
on 04/08/2013
Excerpt: It is perhaps unsurprising that there is growing awareness of the political nature of open data policies. It is only by ignoring the messy reality of both data and politics that positivists can suggest the release of data will inevitably lead to more 'rational' and evidence-based government. In practice, datasets themselves are political objects, and policies to open up datasets are the product of politics. If you look beyond the binary fight over whether government data should be open or not, then you will find a far more subtle set of political questions over the what and the how of opening data. Datasets are built from the categories and relationships that the database designer (or their political masters) decide are important.... read the full post.

www.avc.com
on 03/26/2013
Excerpt: Last month, I pointed to a talk that Nick Grossman gave at Princeton where he laid out the principals of Regulation 2. 0. This slide is from that talk. Regulation 2. 0 is a framework that we have been working on with a bunch of others who are rethinking what government means in a networked world. In the Regulation 1. 0 world (the one we are in now) regulators are required to give you permission to do things. In a Regulation 2. 0 world, as long as you report openly and transparently about what you are doing to the government and everyone else, you are free to innovate and operate. But you are accountable to live up to the rules that are set by the regulators and the data you report about your actions will be measured against those rules.... read the full post.

It's Time for Transparency Reports to Become the New Normal
www.eff.org
on 02/01/2013
Excerpt: When you use the Internet, you entrust your thoughts, experiences, photos, and location data to intermediaries — companies like AT&T, Google, and Facebook. But when the government requests that data, users are usually left in the dark. In the United States, companies are not required by law to alert their users when they receive a government request for their data. In some circumstances, they are explicitly prohibited from doing so. As part of our ongoing Who Has Your Back campaign, EFF has called on companies to be transparent by publishing their law enforcement guidelines and statistics on government requests for user data.... read the full post.

Group calls on Skype to release a Google-like transparency report
gigaom.com
on 01/24/2013
Excerpt: Summary: After Microsoft bought Skype, some were concerned about the security of their Skype calls. Microsoft did little to assuage those concerns, so a group of human rights organizations and journalists are demanding more transparency. Several organizations have called on Microsoft to release details on who it shares Skype data with and what type of data it collects. The software giant purchased Skype in 2011 and last year several groups pointed out that as a result Skype had become less secure, plus Microsoft had filed a patent that looked like it would allow it to eavesdrop on Skype calls.... read the full post.

Beyond the fireworks and barbecue, July 4th serves as an important reminder of the need to hold governments accountable, especially on behalf of those who may not have a chance to do so themselves. With that in mind, today we’re unveiling our first Twitter Transparency Report. Inspired by the great work done by our peers @Google, the primary goal of this report is to shed more light on:
government requests received for user information,
government requests received to withhold content, and
DMCA takedown notices received from copyright holders. The report also provides insight into whether or not we take action on these requests.... read the full post.
