Extreme Salesforce Data: Distributed Application Partitioning with Force.com Canvas and Heroku
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: Learn how seemingly unrelated components can affect one another and determine the ultimate scalability of your app. See live demos that illustrate innovative solutions to tough challenges, including the integration of an external database using Force. com Canvas. Walk away with practical tips for putting best practices into action. The tail end of the webinar uses a sample app to demonstrate several of the best practices that Bud and I covered. Back in February, I promised everyone that I’d put together an article that teaches you how to implement the sample app from the ground up. That article, Extreme Salesforce Data: Distributed Application Partitioning with Force. com Canvas and Heroku, is now available.... read the full post.

The Streaming API, Force.com & You
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: Unless you’ve had a specific use case, it’s possible that you, like me, had nodded along a bit and promised yourself you’d get to it when you had a few spare cycles. Well my friend today is your lucky day, because I have created the simplest possible Streaming API Example for your enjoyment. Getting started is easy: Make sure you are working in a developer org. Install the unmanaged package. Select the new app, LAB Streaming API Demo. Click the Insert a Push Topic Button.... read the full post.

Using JavaScript with Force.com
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: I’ve written previously about how modern web app development increasingly favors client-side (i. e. in the browser) processing over server-side logic. In this “fat-client” architecture, the server is mostly responsible for providing an API that exposes backend data and the client is responsible for invoking the API, processing/massaging the data and rendering the appropriate view. This architecture is especially applicable to mobile web applications built using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. For obvious reasons, JavaScript plays a critical and ever-growing role in this type of architecture. Modern MV* JavaScript frameworks like Backbone, Angular, Ember etc.... read the full post.

Mashing up Force.com APIs with ql.io
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: Last Friday, the Salesforce Platform Developer Evangelism Team ran a (mostly) internal hackday, bringing together evangelists, support staff, product management, R&D engineers and a couple of special community guests for a day of exploratory hacking. Although the theme for the day was ‘Mobile’, this wasn’t a constraint, and I teamed up with sales support engineer Henry Liu to explore ql. io, a ‘declarative, data-retrieval and aggregation gateway for quickly consuming HTTP APIs’ created by eBay’s platform engineering group, in use (among other places) at Kinvey for integrating with third-party data sources.... read the full post.

Speech recognition using Visualforce and the AT&T toolkit
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: Many consider speech recognition to be the next ‘killer app’ for mobile. Apple famously (or infamously, depending on how much you’ve used it) added Siri in iOS 6 and Android responded with Google Now. So how do you add speech recognition to an enterprise mobile application built on the Salesforce Touch Platform? I thought you’d never ask! We recently hosted a webinar introducing the AT&T Toolkit for Salesforce Platform and I demoed a simple mobile application built using Visualforce and the Salesforce Mobile SDK that uses the AT&T toolkit to search for Case records in Salesforce based on a user’s voice input. You can jump to this point in the webinar recording to watch a demo of the application.... read the full post.

Controlling Physical Devices via Approval Processes in Force.com
feedproxy.google.com on

Excerpt: My kids leave the lights on at home. All the time. It’s so bad, I decided to tackle the problem at its source, by introducing an approval step into the ‘switch light on’ process via Force. com. Actually, I’m joking; Kevin O’Hara and Reid Carlberg‘s antics inspired me to try hooking my Raspberry Pi to the platform. I recently bought a PowerSwitch Tail II, so I was looking for a project where I could control some simple appliance; this is what I came up with. Starting with the tactile button switch; it’s wired to pin 24 of my Raspberry Pi. A simple Python app running on the Pi uses the OAuth 2. 0 Resource Owner Password Credentials Grant (also known as the username-password flow) to authenticate to Force.... read the full post.

Bringing Code and Community Together
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: Coming from a community of enterprise software developers, I’ve spent the last three weeks evaluating the community aspects of Developer Force with an eye toward improving our overall process. One of those areas involves Workbook Recipes and Code Share, or what we collectively refer to as code samples. These are the techniques you’ve discovered, the problems you’ve sweated over and hope to share with like-minded developers in the hope that others can avoid the painstaking roadblocks you’ve encountered along the way. As I’ve discovered, submissions to recipes and code share have been suspended and the current process for submitting code samples is on hold.... read the full post.

Become a (Better) Salesforce and Force.com Architect
feedproxy.google.com on

Excerpt: To successfully build any structure that can stand the test of time, whether it’s a dog house or a skyscraper, you’ll get better results if you design it before constructing it. That same principle make sense with software development and implementation. Even though Salesforce solutions and Force. com applications are renowned for their ease of development, customization, and implementation, that doesn’t mean you can skip being a good architect during your app’s lifecycle. What We Do With that thought in mind, we are committed to providing our user community with great content that will help you architect and maintain awesome Salesforce cloud-based solutions.... read the full post.

New Salesforce Eclipse Plugin Available February 15th
blogs.developerforce.com on

Excerpt: If you are reading this, I can confidently address you as “programmers”, because if not, your eyes would have quickly skipped to the next item when they saw the word “Eclipse”.  You, however, are not scared of Eclipse!  You stare directly at it.  (Note: do not stare directly at a solar eclipse. ) We will release a new version of the Eclipse plug-in for Spring ’13 on February 15th.  What’s that, you say?  A “silent release” with no officially sanctioned date?  And a week or two after the actual release?  Before you call “shenanigans” on us, please allow me to explain… For every release of Salesforce, we release an updated version of the Eclipse plug-in.... read the full post.
