Create, Track And Report On Issues Automatically With Jira

If your team lives in Jira, you know how much time goes into getting things into it and keeping them current. Bug reports come in from a support form, incidents from a monitoring tool, vulnerabilities from a security scanner, and someone has to turn each one into an issue, check whether it is a duplicate, and update it when something ships. People search for how to create Jira issues automatically, how to stop duplicate tickets, or how to see deployments on the issue they fixed. All of that is possible through Jira’s APIs, which let the tools where work starts talk to Jira directly, and increasingly let an AI assistant do it for you.

What Jira does

Jira is Atlassian’s project management and issue tracking platform, and its APIs cover the core platform, Jira Service Management and Jira Align. You can find it at atlassian.com/software/jira. What makes Jira’s APIs interesting is not only creating and editing issues. A big part of what they offer is a set of doors for other tools, like deployment pipelines, incident tools and security scanners, to report what they know straight onto the issues it relates to.

What you can get done

I map each provider to business capabilities, the plain jobs a business needs done, and then to the API operations that do each job. Jira maps to 8 capabilities in my index. Here are the ones teams most often need.

Incident Response Management

When something breaks in production, the incident and the review that follows belong next to the work that fixes it. Jira lets an operations tool push incident and review data in, so the people fixing it see it in one place.

  • POST /rest/operations/1.0/bulk pushes incident and review data into Jira.
  • GET /rest/operations/1.0/linkedWorkspaces shows which operations workspaces are linked to your Jira site.
  • DELETE /rest/operations/1.0/bulkByProperties bulk deletes incident data matching certain properties.

Deployment Orchestration

“Did this fix ship yet?” is one of the most asked questions in any software team. Jira lets your build and release pipeline report deployments so they show on the issues they include, and can tell you whether a deployment is gated.

  • POST /rest/deployments/0.1/bulk reports deployments from your pipeline so they show on Jira issues.
  • GET /rest/deployments/0.1/pipelines/{pipelineId}/environments/{environmentId}/deployments/{deploymentSequenceNumber}/gating-status tells you whether a deployment is gated or allowed to proceed.

Vulnerability Management

Security findings are only useful if they become work someone owns. Jira lets a security tool push vulnerabilities in, so they can be triaged like any other issue.

  • POST /rest/security/1.0/bulk pushes vulnerabilities from your security tool into Jira.
  • GET /rest/security/1.0/linkedWorkspaces shows which security workspaces are linked to your Jira site.

Webhook & Event Subscription Management

The other direction: having Jira tell your software when something changes, so you do not have to keep checking.

  • POST /rest/api/3/webhook subscribes your app to Jira issue events.
  • GET /rest/api/3/webhook/failed shows deliveries to your app that failed after all retries.
  • PUT /rest/api/3/webhook/refresh keeps webhooks your app registered from expiring.

Workflows that put it together

A single call is rarely the whole job. A workflow is a recipe of several calls in the right order, written down so software can follow it. Jira has 10 of them indexed on APIs.io, and they cover the everyday issue work:

Ask for it in plain language

More of this is going to be asked of an assistant in a sentence. I write conversational overlays that map the kinds of questions someone might ask to the operation that answers them. For Jira that includes:

  • How do I report deployments from my CI/CD pipeline so they show on Jira issues?
  • Is my deployment currently gated or allowed to proceed?
  • How does my security tool push vulnerabilities into Jira?
  • Which webhook deliveries to my app failed after all retries?
  • How do I subscribe my app to Jira issue events with a webhook?

These are my phrasings, not a record of what people actually ask. Jira has 122 of these overlays on APIs.io; the announcement banner overlay is one example.

Getting started

Jira is freemium with self-serve signup, and the APIs are a hosted service you call. Start with the platform REST API introduction and the authentication guide. Everything I have indexed is on the Jira profile on APIs.io, including the Jira Cloud Platform REST API v2, the Jira Service Management Operations REST API and the Jira Align REST API. Before anyone copies another ticket by hand, check whether the tool it came from can send it to Jira itself.
