Track Errors, Releases And Cron Jobs In Your Software With Sentry

If you run a website or an app, the worst way to find out it is broken is from a customer. So people search for how to get alerted when their site throws errors, how to know which release introduced a bug, or how to find out when a scheduled job quietly stopped running. Sentry is built for exactly those questions, and its API means your other tools, and now AI assistants, can ask Sentry what is going wrong and act on the answer.

What Sentry does

Sentry describes itself as an open-source error tracking and performance monitoring platform that helps developers identify, triage, and resolve issues in their applications in real time. You can find it at sentry.io. Its API covers issues and events, releases and deploys, alerting, dashboards, session replays, cron and uptime monitors, and user provisioning. Sentry also says it runs its own remote MCP server, which is how an AI assistant connects to a service like this.

What you can get done

I map each provider to business capabilities, the plain jobs a business needs done, and then to the API operations that do each job. Sentry maps to 7 capabilities in my index. Here are the ones most teams need.

Observability Management

This is the core: seeing the errors and events your software produces in the wild, grouped into issues, with the detail you need to fix them.

  • GET /projects/{organization_id_or_slug}/{project_id_or_slug}/events/ lists recent error events in a project.
  • GET /issues/{issue_id}/events/ shows the individual events that make up an issue.
  • GET /issues/{issue_id}/events/{event_id}/ pulls one event through its issue.
  • GET /projects/{organization_id_or_slug}/{project_id_or_slug}/events/{event_id}/source-map-debug/ helps explain why a JavaScript stack trace is still unreadable.

Software Quality Engineering

Beyond single errors, the bigger question is whether things are getting better or worse, and which issues to tackle first.

  • GET /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/issues/ finds unresolved issues across all your projects.
  • PUT /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/issues/ resolves many issues across projects at once.
  • GET /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/prevent/test-results/ shows which tests failed recently.
  • GET /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/prevent/test-results/metrics/ tells you how flaky your test suite is overall.

Release Engineering Management

Knowing which version of your software is running, and which one an error started in, is how you go from “something broke” to “this change broke it.”

  • POST /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/releases/ tells Sentry about a new version you are shipping.
  • GET /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/releases/ lists the releases in your organization.
  • PUT /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/releases/{version}/ marks a release as released with a date.

Tenant Identity Federation

For larger teams, people should get Sentry access when they join and lose it when they leave, automatically, from the identity system the company already uses.

  • POST /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/scim/v2/Users provisions a new user from your identity provider.
  • PATCH /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/scim/v2/Users/{scim_user_id} deactivates a user without deleting them.
  • DELETE /organizations/{organization_id_or_slug}/scim/v2/Users/{scim_user_id} removes someone when they are offboarded.

Workflows that put it together

A single call is rarely the whole job. A workflow is a recipe of several calls in the right order, written down so software can follow it. Sentry has 12 of them indexed on APIs.io:

Ask for it in plain language

More of this is going to be asked of an assistant in a sentence. I write conversational overlays that map the kinds of questions someone might ask to the operation that answers them. For Sentry that includes:

  • How do I find unresolved issues across all my projects?
  • Which error events came into a project recently?
  • How do I tell Sentry about a new version I’m shipping?
  • How flaky is my test suite overall?
  • How does offboarding in our IdP remove someone from Sentry?

These are my phrasings, not a record of what people actually ask. Sentry has 43 of these overlays on APIs.io; the alerts overlay is one example.

Getting started

Sentry is freemium with self-serve signup, and the API is a hosted service you call. Start with the API documentation, the events reference and the authentication guide. Everything I have indexed is on the Sentry profile on APIs.io, including the Alerts API, the Check-Ins API and the Commits API. If customers are the ones telling you your site is down, that is the first thing to change.
