Rethinking The API Free Tier In The Agentic Age

Rethinking The API Free Tier In The Agentic Age

There are a lot of changes happening to the economics of APIs that are powering our applications. The free or freemium tier that has been a staple of SaaS and API plans and pricing for over 15 years is drying up and shriveling. And not for the usual reasons, a platform reaching Series C or D and pulling the ladder up. It is disappearing because of the agentic denial of service (DDoS) that has been unleashed across the business landscape. The ROI on offering free tiers of access just isn’t there anymore, if it ever really was.

In the agentic age, you just can’t leave your front door wide open anymore. Or not wide open without the proper controls. Honestly, I think part of the reason the free tier is suffering is that most companies weren’t doing it for the right reasons. They were just looking to inflate numbers, not incite innovation. So shutting it down becomes much easier. But even if you are just trying to incite innovation with developers, having a free tier leaves your platform open to horizontally scaling users draining you of your valuable resources. When an increasing number of your developers are just an endless for-next loop, the math doesn’t work out like it once used to.

The result is that many public API providers are shuttering their free tiers. It makes sense. I don’t fault them. However, I urge everyone to think more about what our front doors look like in an agentic age. Do we want a human doorman positioned at the front door? Can we still provide exploration of our APIs? Our tools? Our resources? If our pricing is dynamic, what variables go into it, and can those be baked into the onboarding logic? Charging for access provides a great filter for the freeloaders and riffraff. Put a price tag on the front door. Require a corporate email. Evaluate the company behind the email. Require a credit card from day one. Require credits to be added and pay per usage, even if the price changes as further trust is established. Get out of the way of your customers, and get in the way of people just wanting to extract value from your platform.

I’ve been exploring how discovery, onboarding, and integration with APIs has collapsed into the shadows because of AI, and I am looking to do the same for plans and pricing. The shift from user to usage to model and token-based pricing has shaken the plans and pricing Etch A Sketch. The economics of free, pro, and enterprise have been evolving over the last decade, but agents literally pounding on your door, while the concept of agents is metaphorically pounded into your leadership’s brains, is really leveling markets right now. I get why leadership wants to close up the front door right now. Things have gotten really noisy and aggressive. A big storm has rolled in and has only begun to dissipate. Regardless of how this plays out, I think rethinking the API free tier is overdue, and it is something I’ll continue to assess right alongside discovery, onboarding, and governance.
