I’ve spent the better part of two decades inventorying public APIs across the U.S. federal government, and the catalog has grown to a point where it deserves its own roundup. What follows is the current state of that catalog: every federal agency I’m tracking that exposes some kind of public-facing API, RSS feed, open-data surface, or referenced internal system, indexed in machine-readable form as APIs.yml in a dedicated GitHub repository under github.com/api-evangelist. Each entry below links to that repository so you can pull the structured index, the controlled vocabulary, and where applicable the OpenAPI specs.
There are 211 agencies in this snapshot, ranging from cabinet departments down through bureaus, independent commissions, inspectors general, and the research labs and museums that quietly publish some of the most useful data in Washington. The list is alphabetical, not hierarchical — the federal org chart is a fiction APIs don’t respect anyway. If an agency is missing or an API has moved, the issues queue on each repo is the right place to flag it.

Closing notes
That’s 211 agencies and 439 discrete APIs, feeds, and referenced systems catalogued in machine-readable form. The structure is consistent across every repository: an apis.yml index at the root, a controlled vocabulary/, JSON-LD context aligning terms to schema.org, capability and rule files, and — where the agency actually publishes a documented contract — an openapi/ folder with specs you can feed straight into Postman, Bruno, Stoplight, or your own tooling.
A few things worth flagging before you start clicking through. First, the federal API landscape is uneven. Some agencies (NASA, NOAA, the Census Bureau, the Federal Reserve, data.gov participants on the open-data side) have first-class developer programs with keys, rate limits, and documentation. Many others publish data through web pages, RSS, PDF schedules, or bulk file drops with no formal API contract — those are still indexed here because they’re how integrators actually consume the data, but I don’t fabricate OpenAPI for surfaces that don’t have a real one. Second, government-internal systems (ConsularLookout/CLASS at State, eCASE, CBP’s TECS, and similar) are referenced for completeness; they aren’t accessible to the public and the entries say so. Third, this is a living catalog: agencies reorganize, portals get sunset, and new programs ship all the time. The repositories are where I push updates, so if you want the current state, pull from GitHub rather than this post.
If you’re integrating against any of these surfaces, the apis.yml file is the place to start — it gives you the canonical name, the human-facing URL, the documentation pointer, and any properties (RSS feeds, status pages, bulk downloads) the agency exposes. From there, the OpenAPI specs (where they exist) drop straight into your client of choice. If you spot something missing or stale, open an issue on the relevant repo. The whole point of doing this in the open is so the catalog gets corrected by the people who actually use it.
