About Owen Rubel

If you've landing on this page you've probably encountered Owen Rubels harrassment on your social media or GitHub, or likely my social media or GitHub. Owen is a well-known harrasser in the space who has been targeting men and women in the space who are trying to make their living doing APIs.

Owen's harrassment is not unique to me, I have just become his target after helping people he's harrassed out of their jobs and into court rooms, and I have been the most outspoken about his harrassment in the space. This has been going on for over a decade now, and this page should provide everything you need to know.

Timeline

The drama with Owen has been going on for a decade now. I can't articulate how exhausting it feels, but I am determined to document his behavior, and push back. However, it is very difficult to also deal with the waves of people who do not know the history, which is why I have created this page to help people understand the scope and context beyond each individual comment.

  • Aren't you worried Owen will sue you for publishing this page? - No. After a decade of harassment I welcome him initiating the case and I will gladly defend myself. I am confident my case would be stronger.
  • Why don't you just block him on LinkedIn? - I did for quite a while, but after getting screenshots from people of what he was saying, I find it better to document.
  • What did you do to make Owen target you? - Helped out other people he was harassing in their court cases and actively work to educate people about his abuse.
  • What do I do if he harrasses me? - Block, report, and do not engage. You need to take his harassment serioursly. Talk to a lawyer if you have the resources. Talk to me if you need help.
  • Why don't you just block him on LinkedIn? - I did for quite a while, but after getting screenshots from people of what he was saying, I find it better to document.
  • Can't LinkedIn Do Anything For You? - I have had no less than 15 people tell me over the years that they have reported him to someone they know at LinkedIn and I have seen no action.
  • Have you talked to lawyers? - Yes, Linux Foundation, Postman, Bloomberg, and my own attorney. He either has to threaten me or I sue for libel and defamation -- which I know I have a case, I just don't have all the money yet.
  • Are you going to sue Owen for libel? - I have set aside $15K into a legal fund and talked to a couple lawyers, and it isn't enough to see case through. I am adding $1K / month to the fund until I do, then I will.
  • Why do you have so much information recently? - His harassment as been constant, with just a handful of breaks. I have documented twice before and even had a page during harassement at Postman. I did not save this information, but it equals what I have occurring today.
  • When will you stop documenting? - When he stops. I regret not documenting this whole time and will keep documenting every incident and reporting here until a court case is filed or he stops. Not until then.
  • Don't you spend a lot of time doing the work? - Yes, I am keeping track of my time. Most days it is just an added burden, while other days it is emotionally crippling. I know this is what he wants, but I will not give in to the abuse of me or anyone else.

Scope of Community Impact

If you want to understand the some of the scope of his harassment you can visit this LinkedIn thread, as there are multiple of Owen's targets contributing to the discussion there, others who have seen his trolling but were wondering what was happening. Owen will not comment on this post, as I've linked to it in every response. I am guessing due to previous court cases, but unsure--regardless, it is an important introduction to what is happening.

Context of the Severity

Most of the time Owen's comments can seem harmless, but the quantity of them, combined with his in-person stalking and use of the the police, and the emails and direct messages he sends increase the damage of his behavior.

LinkedIn Logs

This is a log of all his comments since I stopped blocking and deleting all his comments. Once I saw that he was direct messaging regularly and still talking about me, I started recording this each day. I will keep logging, screenshotting and publishing here as I have time. I will respond to each comment from him with a link to this page to keep the community informed.

I hit the wall (again) with this at the end of February -- I had just been deleting or reporting, and I wish I had been documenting. Moving forward I will just be documenting and recording hours spend having to defend my repuation from Owen.

In Conclusion

I do not enjoy this work. I would rather not have this page. I would prefer Owen stop harassing people in the space. As many times before I am at my whits end. I don't know what to do, but I refuse to go away. I refuse to stop telling stories. If you are a lawyer in the state of Washington, I have $15K to contribute to my case, and the fund will grow each month. I welcome any help or advice to ensure Owen stops harassing people in the API space. Until then, I will keep this page up and educating people about what is happening.
